Playground Safety: Standards and Fence Requirements

A playground should be the safest place in the neighborhood. Unfortunately, the reality is often the opposite: old, rusted structures or newly installed but poorly designed fences can cause serious injuries.

Fences around playgrounds have a specific purpose. Their main task is not only to protect children from cars and animals but also to ensure the fence itself is safe for children. There are strict standards for kindergartens and public spaces that every builder and parent should know. Let’s look at the key safety requirements.

Rule #1: Head entrapment

This is the most critical parameter. Children are curious and often stick their heads between bars. Tragedy occurs when the body passes through an opening but the head gets stuck.

Strict spacing requirements:

  • Dangerous: 11–23 cm — the body can pass, but the head may get stuck.

  • Safe: under 10 cm (usually 89–100 mm) — the gap is too small for a child’s head to pass.

Tip: Always measure the gaps when choosing a playground fence.

Rule #2: Climbing hazards

Children love to climb. If the fence has horizontal elements (like ladder rungs) or decorative parts where a foot can be placed, a child will inevitably try to climb.

Safe design: only vertical bars. Horizontal rails should either be absent or positioned so they cannot be stepped on. This reduces the risk of falls from height.

Rule #3: Sharp edges and points

In private settings, fences sometimes have sharp spikes on top to deter intruders. On playgrounds, this is strictly forbidden.

  • Top edge: should be flat or rounded — no sharp points that could injure a child.

  • Metalwork: all welds must be perfectly smooth. Running a hand along the bars should not cause scratches.

Materials: What children put in their mouths

Small children explore the world with their mouths — they touch the fence and may put their hands or even lips on it.

  • Non-toxic coatings are essential. Cheap paints may contain lead or other harmful substances.

  • Best choice: factory-applied powder coating — environmentally safe, durable, and does not release toxins in sunlight.

Entrance zone: pedestrian gates

The gate is a high-risk area, so two rules apply:

  1. Protect fingers: gaps between hinges and posts should be covered or designed so a child cannot insert a finger when closing.

  2. Control exit: locks or latches should be installed out of reach of small children, usually above 1.50 m. The child should not be able to open the gate alone and exit onto the street.

Safety is adults’ responsibility

If you live near a playground or your child attends kindergarten, check the fence:

  • Does it comply with spacing standards?

  • Are there any sharp points?

  • Does the gate lock reliably?

Child safety is a priority not to be compromised. It’s better to replace a dangerous fence today than to regret it tomorrow.

It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages
