Telescopic gates – a solution for very narrow openings

Sliding gates are convenient and modern. But they have one strict technical requirement – space to slide.

The general rule says: to close a 4 m opening, you need at least 6 m of free fence space to the side (for the “tail” – the counterweight). But what if your facade is narrow and there are only 4 m from the entrance to the corner of the plot?

In the past, in such cases, you had to install swing gates, which take up space in the yard. Today, engineers have found a solution – telescopic gates. A technology that allows a sliding gate to be installed even in the tightest conditions.

Matryoshka principle: how does it work?

Imagine a folding telescope or a fan. The idea is to divide the long gate leaf into two (sometimes three) separate sections.

When opening, these sections don’t just slide to the side – they move in parallel and fold behind one another. In the folded state, the gate takes up half the space of a standard single leaf.

These are truly compact gates that fit where other systems fail.

The math of saved space

Let’s compare the numbers for a 4 m opening:

  • Standard sliding gates – require about 6 m of free space along the fence.

  • Telescopic gates – require only about 3–3.5 m.

This solution is perfect when the space between the entrance and the corner of the plot is extremely limited, or when sliding is blocked by a garage or a tree.

Speed and mechanics

The most interesting part is inside – the leaves are connected by a special system of ropes or chains.

When the automation pushes the first leaf, the mechanism pulls the second. The second leaf moves exactly twice as fast as the first. Thanks to this, the gate opens very quickly – giving you a wide passage in seconds.

Complex installation and foundation

You should know that a telescopic system is not simple, and therefore not cheap. These are specialized solutions for non-standard tasks.

  • Installation – requires highly skilled craftsmen; this is truly complex work.

  • Foundation – since the leaves move in parallel, they need two separate tracks (guides). Therefore, the concrete foundation is wider than for ordinary gates.

  • Adjustment – the rope and roller system requires precise calibration. Even the smallest incline can cause jamming.

When is it worth choosing telescopic gates?

Telescopic gates are not a budget option – they are more expensive than standard gates due to additional hardware and complex installation.

However, in certain situations, this is the only solution. If your plot is narrow and you absolutely don’t want swing gates (which would steal parking space or require hours of snow clearing in winter) – the telescopic system is the only choice.

This is the price for comfort and the ability to use every centimeter of your land effectively. You get a technological, fast, and modern gate where others would say, “It’s impossible.”

Not sure if the gates will fit?

Entrance geometry is an engineering task. A 10 cm miscalculation can prevent the gate from opening fully.
