Your Smart Home Starts at the Perimeter: CCTV, Video Intercom and Access Control

Smart home security starts at the perimeter, not inside. How to choose CCTV, a video intercom and access control for complete property protection.

From a security standpoint, a smart home is primarily about controlling what happens at the property perimeter. Home security begins not with indoor cameras but with knowing who is standing at your gate. The owner who sees a visitor’s face before the doorbell rings is fundamentally better protected than one who has simply installed an alarm.

The classic mistake: building a security system from the inside out — alarm first, cameras second, and the intercom somewhere later. The logic should be reversed. The first line of defence is the perimeter. If a person is already inside, the alarm records the intrusion. If the intercom and home access control are properly set up, the unwanted visitor never reaches the property at all.

Three Levels of Home Security for a Private Property

A perimeter security system is built in stages. Each level addresses a specific need and can be expanded to the next level without replacing what is already installed.

Level Components What it solves Best for
Basic Video intercom + intercom system Visitor identification before opening Apartments, small homes
Intermediate IP cameras + cloud recording + home security app Video monitoring and event archive Private homes
Advanced Access control + ANPR + automation integration Full control: who, when, how long Villas, commercial premises

Video Intercom System: Wired, Wi-Fi or IP

A video intercom system is the starting point for any smart home on a private plot. The choice depends on installation conditions and the need for a stable, reliable connection.

  • Wired video intercom — the most reliable option: stable video and audio regardless of Wi-Fi. Requires cabling to the indoor monitor.
  • IP video intercom with gate wifi module — connects to the home network; the image goes directly to the smartphone. Easier installation but dependent on Wi-Fi quality.
  • Cloud video intercom — stores video online, accessible from any device even when no one is home.
  • 4G/LTE intercom — independent of the home Wi-Fi. The solution for properties without stable internet connectivity.

Home Access Control: Levels of Identification

  • PIN code — the simplest option: a keypad at the gate. Convenient for regular visitors. Risk: the code can be seen or passed on.
  • Access card or RFID tag — without the physical token, the gate does not open. Access for a specific card is easily revoked.
  • Fingerprint or face recognition — biometric identification. Higher security, higher equipment cost.
  • Smartphone control — opening via an app or QR code. Ideal for temporary access for tradespeople or one-time visitors.

For most private homes the optimal combination is: video intercom with a home security app + RFID lock on the pedestrian gate + automated main gates with GSM control.

CCTV: Where to Position Cameras on the Perimeter

  • Gate and pedestrian entrance — the essential position: captures faces and number plates. Mounted at 2.0–2.5 m, aimed at the area in front of the gate.
  • Fence corners — cover the full perimeter line and detect climbing attempts.
  • Parking area — vehicle protection and recording of arrivals and departures.
  • Building entrance — a secondary identification point.

How to Avoid Overspending on Your System

The first mistake: buying components from different manufacturers without checking compatibility. Systems from different brands often cannot be integrated into a single home control app — instead of a convenient platform the owner ends up managing five separate applications.

The second mistake: saving on video storage. Cameras that record but store nothing are of limited value. Minimum archive: 7 days; recommended: 30 days.

Conclusion

A smart home security system works when every component reinforces the others. A properly built security perimeter gives the property owner genuine peace of mind — every day, regardless of where they are.

It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages
